Definition of Learning Difficulties:

Learning difficulties are one of the most ambiguous categories in special education. They are described as a "puzzling" or invisible disability and are also referred to as a hidden disability.

Federal Definition:

Learning difficulties refer to disorders in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or using language, whether spoken or written. This may manifest as a disorder or deficiency in a child's ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or perform mathematical calculations.

National Joint Committee Definition:

Learning difficulties are a general term for a heterogeneous group of disorders that manifest as difficulties in acquiring and using listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning, or mathematical skills. These disorders originate within the individual and are believed to result from dysfunction in the central nervous system. They may persist throughout a person’s life and can be accompanied by problems in self-regulatory behavior, perception, and social interaction. However, these associated issues do not constitute learning difficulties by themselves.

KIRK’s Definition:

KIRK defines students with learning difficulties as a group of children who struggle to acquire language and learning skills through conventional teaching methods. These children are not intellectually disabled, nor do they have visual or auditory impairments that prevent them from acquiring language and learning. These difficulties usually appear as an inability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or solve mathematical problems.
